I never meant to write about my children, but my son was only diagnosed with asperger's syndrome a few months before I started writing this blog. Almost inevitably, I have ended up writing a chronicle of our journey. He knows I do, and at times it has been the only thing that has got me through the day. As he teeters on the cusp of teenage years, I will have to pull back.
But for all the families finding it hard going as their child negotiates the teenage years, I found this comment in my blog by an autistic adult very helpful:

ReplyDeleteHi Pinkoddy, thanks for dropping by, and I hope so!
DeleteI am an autistic teen. I play the flute and I was in marching band this football season. It is sometimes hard, annoying, and plain overwhelming to be autistic as life in general is, but the benefits of additional insight and empathy are not ones I would give up for absolute power, which corrupts absolutely.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment and insight Anna. My son is really interested in music too, has just started playing the recorder and I am hopeful that he will take up another instrument soon.
DeleteHi there hope you are surviving the teens years with your son. I have a son that just graduated from high school and high school is where he really found his social "wings" so to speak. He joined yearbook and really loved it. While his grades were. . .meh, I have to say his new social life far out weighs his grade point average.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your comment Tiffany. We are both finding it difficult at the moment, but all I can do is keep trying to help him and hopefully he will find his wings sometime soon.
DeleteAbsolutely delighted that your son has done so well, you must be very proud. And reading stories like this always helps parents like me who are in the middle of the teenage years,
