You know the way that many Wordpress blogs have these cute little buttons in their sidebar giving readers lots of ways of subscribing to new posts? Well I've been looking for something similar for ages, and now that Google Friend Connect is no more unless you have a blogger blog, my search became more frantic - this post by Typecast explains why. Finally I found these buttons last night - look to your right! - which I think are almost perfect. The only thing I don't like is the attribution, which you don't have to add, but it is good manners, and I was afraid that the buttons would self-destruct if I didn't!
There are lots of different styles and options for additional buttons, but I found the installation instructions a little confusing, so this is my first tutorial, in case you would like to add them too.
I found the buttons here:
1. Choose a style and scroll down the page until you see the small 'add to blogger' icon. Click on this.
2. On the next screen titled 'Add Gadget', check that the correct blog is showing in the left hand window and then click 'Configure Gadget'.
3. This screen is where I went wrong several times!
You need to fill in each field quite carefully and choose your buttons (click 'Update' after you have done this to see what they look like again). This is what worked for me:
4. Click 'Save' and go and admire your blog.
5. But you're not finished yet! Now you need to test each button. If any of them don't work you need to uninstall and then reinstall this gadget.
6. To do this take a deep breath as you're going to need to mess with the html of your blog. It's recommended that you save your blog before doing this (I didn't).
From your Blogger Dashboard, choose 'Design', then 'EDIT HTML'.
Scroll down 'EDIT TEMPLATE' until the bottom portion where you will recognise the names of the gadgets in your sidebar. Highlight and delete 'Gadget 2' like this:
Then re-install the widget, following steps 1-5.
Hope you like these as much as I do.

Oooooh thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I've been wanting something like this for aaaaages! *blows lots of air kisses and runs off to try and add them on blog* xx
You made me giggle with the "be sure to save your template (I didn't)" **lol** I didn't the first time either and it was *such* a nightmare getting everything sorted again! Well done, it looks awesome!
@SAHMlovingit - I'm not the only one then :) xx
@Marsupial Mama - I still like living dangerously occasionally lol :)
OK, now I've got some feedback in this, it looks like as though the buttons don't work so well in Google Chrome and for the Linked In button to work you need to claim your vanity URL.
However @Marsupial Mama already has some pretty buttons on her blog. Maybe they would be a better choice (I do like the look of mine though)
love it
I usually just click Follow on the top left hand part of the page
@Floortime Lite Mama - do you know I'd never even noticed that until now! I think you only see that option if you have a google account as well and with the changes, it is of no use to Wordpress bloggers now apparently. Glad you like them anyway x
Clever clogs. I'm in awe....and as little scared. I will have a lash at this, but am preparing for many moments of terror XXX
OOh...I've wanted a Jazzygal button too! And I did read a recent post on it. Scares the hell out of me! Maybe I'll live dangerously and give it a go too!
Your button looks great ;-)
Thanks :-)
xx Jazzy
I am a in awe... I have a hard time with computers...
**lol** at Floortime Lite Mama!! How is it I never noticed it either?!?! **sigh**
@Jean - I really hope there won't be any terror involved :) xxx
@Jazzygal - Looking forward to seeing it xx
@ Þorgerður - you wouldn't know that from your blog x
@Marsupial Mama - amazing what we miss isn't it!
Anyway since I wrote this @Marsupial Mama has taken up my challenge and written a completely awesome post about her blog buttons which is here:
